Southern Wings Flight School, established in 1935, offers professional pilot training for a wide range of students. From pilots preparing for an airline career, mountain flying and instructor ratings through to private or commercial pilot licensing, Southern Wings Flight School is known for its ability to deliver superior quality pilots who are well equipped to deal with the changing demands of the aviation industry. Committed to excellence the Southern Wings Flight School is fully equipped with a well maintained fleet of fixed wing aircraft suitable for all training purposes. Simulators are also available in both the Invercargill and Auckland bases along with comfortable teaching facilities.

Selected by the Air New Zealand Aviation Institute to be one of only five flight training organisations (FTO’s) in New Zealand to develop career training options for aspiring airline pilots, Southern Wing’s commercial flight training programmes have been specifically designed to meet industry requirements for commercial airline pilots.

Southern Wings Flight School main base is located in Southland, the southernmost region of New Zealand. The main centre of Southland is Invercargill, an attractive, heritage-rich city with a population of around 51,000. The Southland landscape is blessed with stunning scenery. In flying terms, this translates to a huge variety of terrain – everything from gently rolling pasture and hill country to rugged coastline, alpine lakes and snow-capped mountains. Two significant national parks are within easy range – Fiordland and Stewart Island. Southland’s daylight hours are another blessing for aviators. In summer, daylight begins as early as 5am while the evening twilight extends as late as 10.30pm. Stewart Island’s Maori name is Rakiura, which means ‘Heavenly Glow’ – a reference to the fabulous sunsets you’ll see in Southland.

From July 2014, Southern Wings started operating a base out of the Ardmore Airfield near Papakura, Auckland.
