Qatar Airways has 205 aircraft that includes 29 Airbus A320-200, 3 Airbus A321-200, 6 Airbus A330-200, 10 Airbus A330-300, 34 Airbus A350-900, 19 Airbus A350-1000, 10 Airbus A380, 30 Boeing 787-8, 7 Boeing 787-9, 9 Boeing 777-200LR, and 48 Boeing 777-300ER. 

Moreover, the airline has unfulfilled orders for 23 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, 60 Boeing 777X, and 5 Boeing 777 freighters while for Airbus, Qatar Airways holds orders for 27 A350-1000, and 50 A321neo (source).

There are two ways to become a Qatar Airways Pilot; one is a direct application to Qatar Airways  (this is mostly done by experienced pilots) and another is through its Cadet Pilot Programme.

Apply as a licensed pilot directly to Qatar Airways

Assuming that you already hold a Commercial Pilot License (CPL) or Airline Transport Pilot License (ATPL), you may apply directly to Qatar Airways as a First Officer. Please always check the airline’s website directly to learn about the minimum requirements to become a First Officer. As of this posting (August 2021), there is currently no information about this on Qatar Airways’ website.

On the other hand, if you are a highly and well-experienced Pilot, you may join Qatar Executive, a subsidiary of Qatar Airways, as a Captain with G650 Rating provided that you meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Valid ICAO ATPL.
  • Valid Instrument Rating.
  • Valid Class 1 Medical.
  • Last flight on Jet Aircraft must be within the last 12 months.
  • ELP Level 4 or above.
  • Not above 60 years of age  at the time of joining Qatar  Executive.
  • A minimum of 5,000  hours  total time on Aeroplanes.
  • A minimum of 2,000  hours  on Jet Aircraft.
  • A minimum of 1,500  hours  as Pilot-In-Command on Multi-Crew Jet  Aircraft.
  • Type Rated Candidates:
    • A minimum of 500 hours on G650.

*Hours should not include simulator hours.

Join Qatar Airways Cadet Pilot Programme

Successful Cadet Pilots will graduate with a Multi-Crew Pilot License (MPL) and a Bachelor Degree in aviation.

Cadet Pilot Programme Benefits:

  • Full support for tuition fees and other tuition costs. 
  • Monthly stipend while in college.  
  • Medical Insurance with International Coverage.

If interested, you may apply provided that you meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Must be Qatari or have a Qatari mother.
  • Must be aged between 18 and 26 years at the time of commencing the MPL course.
  • Must have a Secondary School Education Certificate corresponding to Ministry of Education & Higher Education grading scale with an average of 75% or higher (Science Stream).
  • Minimum IELTS score of 4.5 overall and no less than 4.5 in each component.
  • Must Pass all the Placement Tests of Qatar Airways.
  • Must pass the Qatar Airways interview.
  • Must be able to obtain the QCAA class 1 medical.
  • Must be able to obtain CID clearance.
